5 Reasons Why Women Should Train Jiu Jitsu

The main reason that women give for training in jiu-jitsu “this is how women can protect themselves”.
There are many reasons for learning jiu-jitsu, it’s ideal for smaller and weaker opponents who need to dominate a large opponent using a technique in lieu of strength. As a woman in the U.S., there is an assault or a beating every nine seconds. Every woman in the U.S. has a 1 in 5 chance of being a victim of rape in her lifetime. doesn’t it make sense that learning jiu-jitsu is an ideal means of self-defense for the smaller weaker opponent?
Jiu-jitsu is more than simply learning self-defense. It’s a way to get into shape, learn lifelong habits, make lifelong friendships, and have a lot of fun while doing it.
If you know someone, male or female, who is considering taking a martial arts class, jiu-jitsu is an ideal choice. There’s no need to be worried. You’re not going to have to choke someone out unless you choose to.
You’ll learn to love your body for what it is capable of and exactly where you’re at.
Both males and females get frustrated not being in the shape that they think they should be in. Clearly more women than men will suffer from eating disorders in their lifetime.
You can blame it on society, media or whatever you choose, however, it’s abundantly clear that many women are more concerned with the circumference of their waist, and bustline than other things.
Jiu-jitsu will ease these insecurities as they work to teach you what your body, whatever shape it’s in, is capable of. Picture yourself choking someone with your thunder thighs, imagine those flexible shoulders and what they can do.
In jiu-jitsu, you’ll learn how to do that, and a whole lot more. It’s not what you weight, it’s not how tall you are, it’s how to make the most of what you have and the exercise sessions will help you to get that hot body you’ve always wanted. You’ll invest more in your appearance and you’ll feel amazing.
2. You won’t need to be large and strong to succeed at jiu-jitsu.
There’s always going to be someone who is stronger, taller, heavier or more capable than you. It doesn’t matter if you’re male or female, you’re simply going to run into this. It can be very intimidating when you walk into your martial arts gym and see all of the fit students that beat the snot out of each other. However, in jiu-jitsu, you don’t have to beat each other up.
Many people who are unfamiliar with Jiu-Jitsu would laugh at the notion that a small girl who is all of 5’2″ tall on a good day, can make people twice her weight submit to her. However, jiu-jitsu is about technique and overcoming brute strength. There’s no requirement to be a champion wrestler or a huge weightlifter to defend yourself. You’ll learn how to live your life knowing that you’re not a target.
3. This sisterhood is amazing.
Those that you’re training with are going to become family to you. It’s hard to not be close to one another when you’re sweating all over each other and trusting each other. You’ll learn to place your safety in their hands and they’ll learn to place their safety in your hands. It’s a great way to step out and learn new skills, self-esteem and self-defense.
College sororities have nothing on the bond that jiu-jitsu can give you. Forget that “sisterly” stuff in sororities, you’ll be learning real-life training and skills that last a lifetime and set your forward for life. It’s an ideal way to give yourself a good boost of self-esteem and put your best foot forward.
There are not many women in jiu-jitsu and they form a close bond. Its rare for women in jiu-jitsu to not befriend one another. It’s a mostly masculine sport and there is just something about the females that are in a sea of testosterone that brings them together. There is just something about working together to overcome your struggles in a man’s world and being a woman while doing it is awesome. You can show yourself that you can do it and it will help you to feel better about yourself and you’ll be able to protect yourself in any situation.
It’s not just the ladies in your own gym, it’s also the other gyms that you visit and competitions. You’ll travel around and work together to hone your skills.
Women who are in jiu-jitsu aren’t tearing each other apart, they’re lifting each other up and leveraging.
4. It destroys ideas of what women “should” and “shouldn’t do”.
Even if you’re not the sort to burn bras (they’re too expensive for that), every time you hear someone restrict activities to specific genders, you may feel your blood pressure begin to rise.
It’s mind-blowing that in this day and age, women are still held to the social beliefs that they shouldn’t partake in particular sports due to the fact that they’re women.
Jiu-Jitsu is a huge middle finger to everyone that has ever scolded you or told you you’re unladylike or tried to put you in my place as a woman.
Everyone is equal when we’re on the mats. There’s no gender, there’s no tough guy, we’re all at the same level and can dish it out and take it.
On another level and an added bonus, most of the men that you will meet during jiu-jitsu are all for gender equality. They respect you just because you have the guts to take these classes.
5. You become a positive role model for younger women.
As a jiu-jitsu student, you may find that young women look up to you and see that you’re healthy and very self-disciplined.
Jiu-jitsu has many great benefits. If you have a daughter or a niece, you’ll find that she wants to be just like you when she grows up. You can be a great role model and help her to love herself as she is. She can learn how to make good friends and care about herself.
You may even get her to join you in training jiu-jitsu.
All of this is a great reason to train. It can be very intimidating as a young woman to take a class with guys in the class, don’t back out because of this, power through it.
If you’re a woman and you’re facing a similar situation, don’t back down due to fear. Jiu-jitsu will make you stronger. It will help you with managing daily activities and challenges.
Regardless of your motivation, whether it’s for self-defense or another reason, grab a gi and put your foot forward and change your life forever. You’ll love what you’ve learned and you’ll find that you’re making yourself a better person and setting the standard for other young women in your life to step out and learn a skill that will give them self-defense techniques as well as more self-esteem.
